RECOMMENDATION:
Board Referral No. 2017.16, was issued to the CAO-Office of Community Engagement & Strategic Advocacy. The referral request that staff: solicit volunteer design proposals with no monetary award from local Monterey Bay artists for the Board of Supervisors to consider adopting one as the first-ever, official Monterey County flag.
On January 30, 2018, the Board of Supervisors approved the selection process for the design of the official County flag with the formation of a Flag Selection Committee. The committee met on May 31, 2018, reviewed and arrived at the selection of the top four (4) final art submissions. While the initial direction was to select the top three (3), the fourth selection is due to a tie in the scoring process.
On June 19, 2018, the Board of Supervisors approved that the Flag Selection Committee collaborate with a graphic designer who assisted in a process to integrate elements of the selected art submissions to arrive at a final image that would ultimately be adopted as the County Flag's image for print. The outcome of that process is that each artist resubmitted their individual pieces with edits to fit the specific details the as the Board expressed as desirable imagery depicting all of Monterey County's districts. Staff recommends the Board of Supervisors select one of the four resubmissions as shown in Attachment A.
Upon Board selection and approval of the final image, staff will proceed to begin production and preparation of the inaugural flag to return to the Board of Supervisors on September 11, 2018.
