RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the Board of Supervisors:
a. Receive a presentation from the Alliance of Monterey Area Preservationists on the history of
the Old Monterey County Jail; and
b. Conduct a dedication ceremony for commemorative plaque on the Old Monterey County Jail.
SUMMARY:
District 1 requested the Resource Management Agency (RMA) to facilitate a presentation by the Alliance of Monterey Area Preservationists (AMAP) to the Board of Supervisors (Board) on December 4, 2018 regarding the history of the Old Monterey County Jail. A ceremonial event is set to occur following the presentation to unveil a commemorative plaque in honor of the Old Monterey County Jail.
DISCUSSION:
AMAP is a non-profit agency that focuses on advocating to protect historic treasures in Monterey County. The mission of AMAP is to educate the community about the value of recognizing, preserving, securing, and displaying the Monterey area's historic assets for public benefit; support activities which interpret and share the Monterey area's rich cultural heritage with residents and visitors; and encourage advocates for ideas, programs, and plans which contribute to the understanding of the Monterey area's cultural, ethnic, architectural legacy.
On December 4, 2018, AMAP will be providing the Board with a presentation on the history of the Old Monterey County Jail (Attachment A, AMAP Press Release). A ceremonial event is set to occur following the presentation to unveil a commemorative plaque in honor of the Old Monterey County Jail being designated on the National Register of Historic Places.
