RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the Board of Supervisors Approve and authorize the Assistant County Administrative Officer, to execute a sole source one-year Event Agreement with WC Vision LLC, for the right to conduct a sports car type road racing event at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in 2019.
SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:
WC Vision LLC wishes to enter into a one-year Event Agreement to conduct the Intercontinental GT Challenge California 8-Hours, a sports car type road racing event, at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca on March 29-31, 2019.
When introduced in 2017, the California 8 Hours became the longest endurance racing event ever hosted in the history of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca dating back to 1957. The eight-hour race completed by teams with three co-drivers creates a high-speed game of chess where speed and pit strategy come into play.
The grid consists of over 30 teams and a variety of manufacturers including Aston Martin, Audi, Bentley, BMW, Ferrari, Ford, Ginetta, Hyundai, Lamborghini, Mercedes-AMG, Panoz and Porsche. Activation by manufacturers is particularly prevalent among Audi, who won the 2018 manufacturers' championship, and Bentley, which will be celebrating their 100th anniversary in 2019. Top factory drivers from around the world are lured to compete at this event.
The Intercontinental GT Challenge California 8-Hours returns for the third consecutive season to kick-off the 2019 race season. Previously hosted at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in October, the event will be the second of the GT3 endurance racing series' five races on five different continents. WC Vision has provided County the same insurance terms as were provided for the 2018 event.
