RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the Board of Supervisors:
Approve and authorize the Director of Health or Assistant Director of Health to accept grant funding from the Community Foundation for Monterey County, in the amount of $24,000 for the project period of January 1, 2019 through November 30, 2019, for Grant Title: Feral Community Cats Shelter, Neuter, Return (SNR) program at Monterey County Animal Services (MCAS).

SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:
The Monterey County Health Department Animal Services Division established a "Community Cats" spay, neuter and release (SNR) program to reduce the euthanasia of feral cats in 2012 utilizing grant funds provided by the SPCA of Monterey County. The goal of the program is to reduce the free-roaming feral cat population without resorting to euthanasia by sterilizing healthy cats and returning them to their original locale though the use of traps and holding boxes. The intent of this process is to break the cycle of population growth of feral cats.

The Community Cats program has not been active since 2013 due to Animal Services Shelter staffing shortages. The recent addition of staffing and the movement toward combining the City and County shelters has allowed for the opportunity to seek out grant funding opportunities to once again support the SNR program.
