SUMMARY DISCUSSION:

The County of Monterey Health Department, Public Health Bureau, (Public Health) was awarded a two-year grant from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), Healthy Brain Initiative State and Local Partnerships to Address Dementia Request for Application (RFA) #23-10055 (total grant award $707,565).

The goals of the Healthy Brain Initiative grant are to promote cognitive health, address cognitive impairment for people living in the community, and help meet caregiver needs. Public Health staff partnered with Alliance on Aging on the project proposal to integrate messaging on brain health and cognitive decline risk to reduce stigmas, dispel myths, and support early detection and modification of risk factors. Integrated messaging will be accomplished through targeting social marketing in Spanish and English using culturally, linguistically, and age-appropriate health communication techniques.

Grant funding to the Alliance on Aging will provide capacity to increase accessibility of English and Spanish senior classes focused on chronic disease prevention and healthy lifestyles that support cognitive health. The Alliance on Aging will provide monthly caregiving training classes and monthly caregiver support group sessions that emphasize the important role of caregivers in supporting people with dementia and maintaining caregivers’ health and well-being.

Alliance on Aging began providing services for seniors in Monterey County in 1970 and serves over 20,000 individuals annually throughout Monterey County. Originated by a small group of volunteers, Alliance on Aging’s mission is to support seniors to help them remain in their homes with optimum independence. Alliance on Aging provides outreach, education, wellness activities, resources, and enrichment opportunities geared to seniors of all ages. All services are inclusive, promote aging with dignity, and are offered at no cost to individuals in both Spanish and English and other languages as needed.

Alliance on Aging has a long history of partnerships with local senior services organizations and providers including Monterey County Behavioral Health, the Transportation Agency of Monterey County (TAMC) and the local health care systems throughout the county. Alliance on Aging has agreements with most of the local affordable housing developments to provide services to their residents and as such will help facilitate engagement of local stakeholders and community members.

This work supports the County of Monterey Health Department 2018-2024 Strategic Plan Initiative(s): 1. Empower the community to improve health; 2. Enhance community health and safety through prevention; and 3. Ensure access to culturally and linguistically appropriate, customer-friendly, quality health services. It also supports three of the ten essential public health services, specifically: 3. Communicate effectively to inform and educate people about health, factors that influence it, and how to improve it; 4. Strengthen, support and mobilize communities and partnerships to improve health; and 7. Assure an effective system that enables equitable access to the individual services and care needed to be healthy.
