RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the Board of Supervisors:
a. Accept the recommendation of the Monterey County Fish and Game Commission to award four (4) funding grants; and
b. Approve the distribution of Fish and Game grant funds in the amount of $10,200 for the following specified grant projects for Fiscal Year 2013 - 2014:
Monterey Bay Youth Outdoor Day $2,500
Rancho Cielo $1,000
Marine Mammals of CA $1,700
Ventana Wildlife Society $5,000
SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:
The Monterey County Fish and Game Commission is recommending that the Board of Supervisors approve four (4) Fish and Game Grant projects for Fiscal Year 2013 - 2014. This action is consistent with Board Resolution 81-239, which states that all expenditures using County Fish and Game funds must be approved by the Board of Supervisors.
The four grant applications were legally placed on the Monterey County Fish and Game Commission's agenda for review on June 11, 2013. All grant projects were reviewed for consistency with California State Fish and Game Code criteria. A copy of the relevant portion of the draft minutes from the June 11, 2013 meeting is attached hereto regarding the presentations and discussions on the applications. Each applicant has agreed to the terms and conditions of the grant agreement for use of Fish and Game propagation funds. By majority vote, the Commission recommended that the Board of Supervisors approve the following grants in the amounts shown below:
1. Monterey Bay Youth Outdoor Day - $2,500
Project: Outreach event to educate and expose youth to outdoor activities and wildlife.
2. Rancho Cielo - $1,000
Project: Purchase aeration pump for Rancho Cielo fishing pond.
3. Marine Mammals of CA - $1,700
Project: Assist with the cost of printing brochures to be distributed to visitors and other various groups to acquaint them with the mammals present in our local waters.
4. Ventana Wildlife - $5,000
Project: Purchase non-lead ammunition for use in the Condor Corridor.
OTHER AGENCY INVOLVEMENT:
County Counsel has reviewed and concurs with this recommendation.
FINANCING:
Sufficient funds are available in the Fiscal Year 2013 -14 budget, Appropriation PAR002 Park Unit 8155 to award the grants recommended by the Commission. There is no adverse impact to General Fund Contribution as a result of this action.
