SUMMARY DISCUSSION
:
The County of Monterey Health Department’s Public Health Bureau will provide an oral presentation regarding the Public Health Bureau’s Nutrition Program.  The Nutrition Program is part of the Public Health Bureau’s Division of Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention. Nutrition programming currently includes Women, Infants and Children (WIC), CalFresh Healthy Living, and Senior Nutrition. The presentation will include funded services, program reach, current outreach strategies and collaborative work.

WIC is a supplemental nutrition program that provides access to nutritious foods and nutrition education and counseling, including breastfeeding counseling. CalFresh Healthy Living brings together a broad range of community partners to implement comprehensive nutrition education and obesity prevention strategies to empower families and communities to improve health, reduce obesity and adopt and maintain healthy eating, physical activity, and lifestyle choices. Senior Nutrition services currently include nutrition education services by a registered dietitian and nutrition educators to 12 locations in Monterey County where Area Agency on Aging (AAA) meals are prepared.

Public Health Nutrition Programming can lead to healthier, more nutritious diets, access to healthy foods and numerous other improved outcomes for residents of Monterey County.

This work supports the Monterey County Health Department 2018-2022 Strategic Plan Goals:
1. Empower the community to improve health; 2. Enhance community health and safety through prevention; and 3. Ensure access to culturally and linguistically appropriate, customer-friendly, quality health services. It also supports three of the ten essential public health services, specifically: 3. Communicate effectively to inform and educate people about health, factors that influence it, and how to improve it; 4. Strengthen, support, and mobilize communities and partnerships to improve health; and 7. Assure an effective system that enables equitable access to the individual services and care needed to be healthy.
