RECOMMENDATION:

 

It is recommended the Board of Supervisors:

 

a. Authorize the Interim Chief Executive Officer for Natividad Medical Center (NMC) or a designee to execute a non-standard agreement with Medtronic USA, Inc. for MR8 repair-exchange service plan services at NMC for a maximum County obligation of $36,270 for the term retroactive to June 15, 2025 through June 14, 2028.

b. Approve the NMC’s Interim Chief Executive Officer’s recommendation to accept non-standard contract provisions within the agreement.

 

SUMMARY:

 

The Medtronic Midas Rex MR8 repair exchange program allows you to quickly swap a broken surgical drill for a fully refurbished one, minimizing operating room downtime.

 

DISCUSSION

 

The Medtronic Midas Rex is a high-speed surgical drill system used by surgeons to cut, saw, drill, and remove bone and biomaterials. It is widely used across highly precise and demanding medical procedures performed in Natividad’s Surgery Department including neurosurgery (such as craniotomies), spinal decompression, ear/nose/throat (ENT) procedures, and orthopedics.

 

OTHER AGENCY INVOLVEMENT:

 

The Office of County Counsel has reviewed and approved this agreement as to form, and the Auditor-Controller has reviewed and approved as to payment provisions. The agreement has also been reviewed and approved by NMC’s Finance Committee and by its Board of Trustees on August 7, 2026.

 

FINANCING:

 

The cost for this agreement is $36,270 of which $24,180 is included in the FY 2026-27 Adopted Budget. Amounts for remaining years of the agreement will be included in those budgets as appropriate. There is no impact on the General Fund with this action.

Natividad Medical Center is a Level 2 Trauma Center serving all of Monterey County. The Surgery Department offers services in the following specialties that require the use of the Midas Rex:

 

                     Neuro Surgery

                     Orthopedic Trauma Surgery

                     ENT

 

The Midas Rex MR8is a high-speed, pneumatic drill with a lightweight handpiece for smooth, precise bone cutting for the above surgical procedures.
