SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:

The Department of Social Services administers the Monterey County Area Agency on Aging (AAA) and is responsible for developing programs that serve older adults, adults with disabilities, family caregivers, and residents in long term care facilities.  These programs and services are provided locally through the AAA and contracted to local community agencies.

According to the California Department of Aging’s (CDA) 2022 population projections, Monterey County is projected to have 94,097 residents who are age 60 and over, which is an increase of 9.4% from 2021. Ensuring that vital programs and services continue for this growing population is a priority for the AAA.

The 2022-2023 Area Plan Update is the AAA’s annual update to its current four-year Area Plan (2020 to 2024). It provides current demographic information and changes in program services for the next fiscal year including home-delivered and congregate meals, outreach services, nutrition education, family caregiver services, legal assistance, oversight of long-term facilities, health insurance counseling, and much more.

No substantive changes are included with the 2022-2023 Area Plan Update and a public hearing was held during the AAA Advisory Council Meeting via Zoom on June 23, 2022, to discuss funding levels and planned services.  This updated plan was developed in collaboration with the Area Agency on Aging Advisory Council. In addition, contracted service providers were given an opportunity to review and comment on the Plan Update.

OTHER AGENCY INVOLVEMENT:

The Area Agency on Aging Advisory Council approved the 2022-2023 Area Plan Update on June 23, 2022.

FINANCING:

There is no fiscal impact to the County General Fund associated with receiving or approving the 2022-2023 Area Plan Update.
