SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:

In December 2011, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ("CMS") and the California Department of Public Health ("CDPH") conducted a validation survey at Natividad Medical Center during which the CMS surveyor of the hospital's Food and Nutrition department identified that the existing three compartment sink was not adequate to fully immerse large pans in sanitizing solution without rotating the pans. The proper sanitization of dishes is critical to patient safety and service. As part of the hospital's response to CMS's survey, procedures were put in place to ensure all dishes were being properly sanitized. After receiving authorization from Andrea Rosenberg, Assistant Administrator, Operations and Support Services, several restaurant suppliers were contacted by the Director of Food Services, to treat the situation as an emergency. Val's plumbing provided a quote including the required custom sink with delivery and installation. The total cost of the project was $19,766.

OTHER AGENCY INVOLVEMENT:

County Counsel has reviewed and approved the procedures for finding the need for an emergency action and the emergency contract.

FINANCING:

The cost for demolition and removal of the existing three compartment stainless steel sink, installation of the sink and necessary plumbing adjustments is $19,766. These expenditures will be fully funded by NMC, Fund 9600 unit 960. This action will not require any additional General Fund subsidy.
