DISCUSSION:
The staff of the Monterey County Free Libraries (“MCFL”) have successfully applied for a grant from the California State Library for $225,213 in order to provide school lunches and engaging activities to youth during the summer. Most branch libraries will host meals on site ranging from one day a week to five days a week. In addition, some branches will do outreach to other meal sites by bringing activities to youth, host volunteers in the libraries for learning opportunities, and conduct other activities with grant partners. This grant award is funded by the State of California to enable students reliant on school meals for healthy eating to continue having food on days school is closed. Food will be provided by a variety of school site partners and activities will include games, crafts, and learning opportunities at library sites.
OTHER AGENCY INVOLVEMENT:
County Counsel has reviewed this item and approved as to form.
FINANCING:
The direct expenses will be funded by the grant award. The food will be funded by the school sites through the school lunch program, and by the Food Bank for Monterey County. This grant program was expected and anticipated in the Department’s FY 23-24 Budget and will be included in the departments FY 24-25 budget
