Report

RECOMMENDATION:

It is recommended that the Board of Supervisors:

Receive an oral presentation and inventory report of current programs and services for the homeless which are either partially or fully funded and receive an update on possible approach to coordinating services.

SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:

The Monterey County Department of Social Services and the Monterey County Health Department compiled a summary of homeless services currently offered throughout Monterey County (Attachment A). It includes services financially supported by County Departments as well as services supported by community-based organizations.  In presenting this information, it is recognized that homelessness continues to be a serious issue confronting our County and continuing development of resources is needed to close the gap in services for the homeless and people living in inadequate housing.

To best address this growing issue, the Department of Social Services, the Health Department and the CAO’s office have working together to identify a solution to the first order of business, which is service coordination. Given the limited amount of services and resources offered to address this colossal issue there is an imperative need for the adequate coordination of services. Department Directors in partnership with other community and city leaders are in the midst of developing a strategy that can help address this vital need. The group is currently working with community partners to identify service providers that could possibly fill the role of a coordinating body, which would help assure effectiveness and efficiency of homeless services.

OTHER AGENCY INVOLVEMENT:

The Department of Social Services, Health Department, and the CAO have been developing collaborations to strengthen homeless services throughout the County.

FINANCING:

There is no impact to the County General Fund with receipt of this report.
