Approve and authorize the Chief Information Officer or designee to execute a Donation Agreement to donate a surplus of fifteen (15) L3 Harris Portable Radios to the City of Gonzales.

Report

RECOMMENDATION:

It is recommended that the Board of Supervisors:

Approve and authorize the Chief Information Officer or designee to execute a Donation Agreement to donate a surplus of fifteen (15) L3 Harris Portable Radios to the City of Gonzales.

SUMMARY:

The Information Technology Department (ITD) received a request for a donation of fifteen (15) surplus L3 Harris Portable Radios for the City of Gonzales Police Department.  The radios were purchased by the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office and given to ITD for surplus on December 15, 2021. The transfer of these radios to the City of Gonzales will increase communication within the City of Gonzales public safety realm and its capabilities as they currently are limited to single band radios.  ITD recommends donating the radios to another public entity for their use.

DISCUSSION:

The Sheriff’s Office has requested the Information Technology Department to surplus fifteen (15) L3 Harris Portable Radios, multi-band VHF/700, with encryption and speaker microphone capabilities. These radios are heavily used and are no longer serviceable by L3 Harris, and parts are no longer available except through third-party vendors. The use of the radios is restricted to public-safety bands.

The City of Gonzales is requesting the transfer of these radios to the City of Gonzales Police Department. Although the radios are no longer of use to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, they are still operable, and meet the needs of their law enforcement personnel.

The Information Technology Department recommends transferring the L3 Harris Portable Radios to the City of Gonzales.

OTHER AGENCY INVOLVEMENT:

County Counsel has reviewed this Agreement and has approved it as to form.
