Report

RECOMMENDATION:

It is recommended that the Board of Supervisors:

a.                     Authorize the Office of the District Attorney to execute an agreement with Hector A. Mendoza for the design, fabrication and installation of a Victims of Crime Memorial Sculpture, located in the courtyard between the County Administration Building and the Office of the District Attorney;

b.                     Authorize the Auditor-Controller to amend the FY 2021-22 Adopted Budget for the Office of the District Attorney, Fund 001, Appropriation Unit DIS001, to increase appropriations by $25,000.00, where the financing source is Victims Unit Trust Fund (019-2632) (4/5ths vote required).

 

SUMMARY:

The Office of the District Attorney requests authorization to cause the installation of a monument, to honor Victims of Crime in Monterey County.  The monument is approximately 8 feet tall and 3 feet wide, to be located in the courtyard, outside the main County Administration Building and the East/West Wings, picture of the location is attached. This memorial is for the Victims of Crime in our community, providing support to family members, residents, and visitors to the campus, where they can take a moment to reflect on the losses of those who were taken too early, picture of a model of the memorial is attached.  The District Attorney further requests authority to execute an agreement with Hector A. Mendoza, Associate Professor of Sculpture and Installation at CSUMB, for the work.  A foundation form for the sculpture will be prepared by the County, and concrete for the foundation will be donated to the County by Monterey Peninsula Engineering.

 

 

DISCUSSION:

This request is urgently submitted to facilitate installation prior to the annual Victims of Crime Remembrance Ceremony, to be held on April 29, 2022.

 

OTHER AGENCY INVOLVEMENT:

The Resource Management Agency has approved a permit for this sculpture, copy is attached.

 

FINANCING:

The cost of this memorial is fully funded through the District Attorney’s Victims Unit Trust Fund and has no impact on General Funds.

 

 

BOARD OF SUPERVISORS STRATEGIC INITIATIVES:

The proposed recommended actions address the Board of Supervisors Administration Strategic Initiative, providing support to victims of crime in our community.
