Accepted an oral presentation from the Health Officer and Project Coordinator regarding
the Striving to Reduce Youth Violence Everywhere through Local Public Health
Leadership," funded by an Award from the Department of Health and Human Services,
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in the amount of $225,000.00 for FFY 2011-
12.

of $225,000.00 for FFY 2011-12.

RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the Board of Supervisors accept an oral presentation from the Health
Officer and Project Coordinator regarding the Striving to Reduce Youth Violence Everywhere
through Local Public Health Leadership," funded by an Award from the Department of Health
and Human Services, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in the amount of $225,000.00
for FFY 2011-12.
SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:
On August 30, 2011, the CDC awarded funding to Monterey County Health Department in the
amount of $225,000.00 for year one of an anticipated five-year funding cycle. This award
supports the project, Striving to Reduce Youth Violence Everywhere STRYVE) through Local
Public Health Leadership." Funds will be used to expand the capacity of MCHD to strengthen
the prevention aspects of the Salinas Comprehensive Strategy for Community-wide Violence
Reduction 2010-2012," in collaboration with the Community Alliance for Safety and Peace
CASP). On October 11, 2011, the Monterey County Board of Supervisors authorized the
acceptance of the Award.
This oral presentation will give an overview of the following: MCHD goals and objectives; the
role of public health in preventing youth violence; MCHD's relationship with CASP; timeline of
activities; and strategies involving participating agencies. A copy of the presentation is on file
with the clerk of the board.
OTHER AGENCY INVOLVEMENT:
No other agency involvement regarding this presentation.
