RECOMMENDATION:

It is recommended to allow Natividad Medical Center;

a. Approve the Plans and Specifications for the Natividad Medical Center, Project #9600-28 - Building 500, Emergency Department Exterior Door Replacement, Bid #NMC-1003 for contractors to bid on construction; and
b. Authorize the Clerk of the Board to advertise the “Notice to Contractors” in The Californian on August 6, and 13, 2012.

SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:

NMC’s Building 500 is occupied by the Emergency, Radiology and Admitting Departments. There are two automatic entrance doors allowing patient access to these departments. These doors also serve as an entrance for NMC staff. The entrance is comprised of an outer door which is a bi-folding automatic door and an interior door which is a pair of automatic swing doors. The Bi-fold doors have been out of operation for two years. Their failure was caused by exposure of high wind pressure, preventing the doors from opening and causing an actuator failure. The double swing automatic doors, although still functional, have also been a casualty of the exposure of high wind pressure. These doors do not meet current safety standards (ANSI 156.10 - Safety Sensors for closing on approach and entrance) and are at their “end of life”. Typical life span of swing type automatic doors is 10 years. These doors have been in operation since the opening of Natividad Medical Center in 1999. The Emergency Department has requested to have the automatic doors replaced with automatic sliding doors.
