A Resolution honoring Richard Peixoto as the
Santa Cruz County Farm Bureau'Farmer of the Year
award recipient for 2008.
WHEREAS, Richard Peixoto, who is married to Marisela and has thre children: Ashley,
Amanda, and Ricky, is the sixth of seven children of parents who were natives to the Pajaro
Valley, and the son of a worker for a local fertilizer company, which spawne an interest in him
at an early age about growing crops and farming and eventually led to a successful thirty-five
year career in agriculture; and
WHEREAS, Richard Peixoto engaged in his first farming venture while in the 8th grade when
he acquired tomatoes that his brother had grown and hired neighborhood c ildren to pick and
pack them for market; and
WHEREAS, Richard Peixoto started his first company, Dick Peixoto Farris, while he was a
senior at Watsonville High School and operated under the guidance of his ig teachers and the
watchful eyes of his mother, who kept his books; and
WHEREAS, Richard Peixoto first expanded his farming venture into othet agricultural areas,
such as irrigation and laser leveling; brought his sister, Joanne, into the business; converted his
original land to organic farming in 1966; and later added more farmland tha currently totals 55
acres in the Pajaro Valley and over 1,000 acres across California; and
WHEREAS, Richard Peixoto is involved in the Santa Cruz County Fair; donates the use of his
equipment and products for display during the fair, contributes produce to Agri-Culture for use
in their Progressive Dinner, and donated a spectacular luncheon at his horn during last year's
live auction; and
WHEREAS, Richard Peixoto has been a member of the Santa Cruz County Farm Bureau since
1976 when he became active in the Young Farmers and Ranchers program; is a current member
