Authorize the Chair to sign a form, to be sent to the United States Board
on Geographic Names, supporting a name change from The Lakes to
Abbott Lakes for lakes found in the Los Padres National Forest

WHEREAS, the United States Geological Survey USGS) prepares maps that cover the
entire United States;
WHEREAS, the USGS maps have identified two lakes in the Arroyo Seco area, within
the Los Padres National Forest, as The Lakes since at least 1981;
WHEREAS, the United States Board on Geographic Names is responsible for
standardizing names for use by the Federal government, including the USGS, and must approve
name changes;
WHEREAS, the United States Board on Geographic Names received a request to rename
the two lakes in the Los Padres National Forest to Abbott Lakes;
WHEREAS, on May 23, 2008, the Board of Supervisors received a request from the
United States Board on Geographic Names to rename the two lakes in the Los Padres National
Forest, asking whether the Board of Supervisors would support the name change;
WHEREAS, according to the book Monterey County Place Names, the common name
used in the area for the lakes is Abbott Lakes, after the Abbott family, early settlers of the land
on which the lakes are located.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Monterey County Board of Supervisors
hereby authorizes the Chair to sign a form, to be sent to the United States Board on Geographic
Names, supporting a name change from The Lakes to Abbott Lakes for lakes found in the Los
Padres National Forest
