Resolution recognizing Community Hospital of the Monterey
Peninsula for its support of Natividad Medical Center NMC)
through the Intergovernmental Transfer & Grant Agreement.
WHEREAS, Natividad Medical Center NMC), founded in 1886 as a co unity hospital, is
now an established 172-bed acute care hospital providing comprehensive, high quality acute
medical care, health and wellness services and serves as Monterey County' teaching hospital
and center for academic excellence; and
WHEREAS, Monterey County is one of the remaining 15 California Cour
public safety net hospitals and that Natividad Medical Center is the prii
provider to the poor and indigent, delivering care to all who need it, regardle
immigration status or insurance; and

WHEREAS, Monterey County is committed to operating Natividad Medical Center within
budgetary limits; and
WHEREAS, Natividad Medical Center has experienced significant financial distress and losses
exceeding $24 million per year by the year 2006 with an anticipated cum lative loss of $70
million; and
WHEREAS, Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, a Califo is nonprofit public
benefit corporation is dedicated to identifying and meeting the changing hea thcare needs of the
residents of Monterey County; and
WHEREAS, while Monterey County was striving to identify viable fis al alternatives for
continued operation of Natividad Medical Center, Community Hospital of the Monterey
Peninsula and its leadership offered technical and financial support to e-engineer NMC's
operations and stabilize its financial status by entering into an Intergov rnmental Transfer
Agreement effective July 18, 2006. This agreement constituted a coop rative arrangement
