It is recommended that the Board of Supervisors:
Approve appointment of Lisa B. Hernandez, M.D., M.P.H., to the position of Health Officer at an annual salary of $190,686, effective November 3, 2012.
SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:
Monterey County has been without a permanent Health Officer since the retirement of Hugh F. Stallworth, M.D., M.P.H. in June of 2012. During the intervening period Dr. Lisa Hernandez, has served in the capacity of Interim Health Officer while the county recruited for the position. After a nationwide recruitment, the County Director of Health is recommending Dr. Hernandez for the Health Officer position. The candidate pool included a number of qualified candidates and we were assisted in candidate screening by both external and internal reviewers. Dr. Hernandez has been with the County for 5 years and has the strong support of the local physician community as well as critical understanding of the Department Strategic Plan. She was the co-chair of the strategic plan development and as such participated in County forums and is a strong advocate for wellness in Public Health.
Dr. Hernandez has earned her medical degree while at Georgetown University, School of Medicine, and her Masters Degree in Public Health from University of California Berkley. In addition to her training in public health experience, Dr. Hernandez was an attending OB/GYN in New Mexico; Preceptor at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Health Services Department and Preceptor with Santa Cruz County Health Services Agency, Emergency Preparedness Unit.
