RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the Board of Supervisors:
Adopt a Resolution recognizing the positive efforts made by the Steinbeck Innovation Center in support of economic development in Monterey County.
SUMMARY:
On February 12, 2014, the Monterey County Board of Supervisors Economic Opportunity Committee (Economic Opportunity Committee) approved forwarding a resolution recognizing the positive efforts made by the Steinbeck Innovation Center to the Board of Supervisors for consideration. It directed staff to prepare a recommended resolution to be submitted to the Board of Supervisors for adoption.
On May 29, 2013, the Economic Opportunity Committee received a presentation from the Steinbeck Innovation Center which provided an overview for their vision of stimulating agricultural research, innovation and prosperity.
The attached resolution outlines the Steinbeck Innovation Center's vision and mission, which complements the efforts of the Economic Opportunity Committee. In addition, the Economic Opportunity Committee concludes that the efforts of the Steinbeck Innovation Center align with the overall Economic Development Strategic Plan, for Monterey County.
DISCUSSION:
The Steinbeck Innovation Center has a vision and mission of stimulating our region's agricultural industry, educational resources, and innovative drive, not only building local prosperity, but also cultivating a competitive industry, focused on solving the world's food, water, and energy related challenges.
The Steinbeck Innovation Center is promoting Monterey County economic development through initiatives/programs, such as: 1) "FastTrac(r) New Venture Program(tm)", an 8-week program that assists individuals interesting in acquiring skills and knowledge to build successful companies, 2) "CoderDojo Salinas"...
