RECOMMENDATION:

It is recommended the Board of Supervisors:

a. Authorize the Purchasing Manager for Natividad Medical Center (NMC) to execute an Agreement with MSDS Online for MSDS Database License and Annual Subscription Services at NMC in an amount not to exceed $9,243 for the period September 28, 2012 to September 27, 2015; and
b. Accept non-standard language in the Agreement provided by the vendor as recommended by the NMC Chief Executive Officer; and
c. Authorize the Auditor/Controller’s Office to issue annual payments not to exceed the total aggregate amount as requested by the NMC Chief Executive Officer.

SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:

A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is required under the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard, and satisfaction of the requirement is monitored by local, state, and federal agencies, as well as the Joint Commission. The MSDS is a detailed informational document prepared by the manufacturer or importer of a hazardous chemical. It describes the physical and chemical properties of the product. MSDS’s contain useful information such as flash point, toxicity, procedures for spills and leaks, and storage guidelines. Information included in a Material Safety Data Sheet aids in the selection of safe products, helps one understand the potential health and physical hazards of a chemical and describes how to respond effectively to exposure situations.
