RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the Board of Supervisors:
a. Reallocate a vacant 1.0 FTE Chronic Disease Prevention Coordinator to a 1.0 FTE Public Health Nurse II in Health Department Budget Unit HEA003-8124; and
b. Authorize the County Administrative Office to incorporate the approved position changes in the FY 2012-13 Adopted Budget.

SUMMARYDISCUSSION:
The Monterey County Health Department- Public Health Bureau (PHB) contracts annually with the California Department of Public Health - Immunization Branch Division of Communicable Disease Control (CDPH) to conduct a general immunization program. Funding for this program aims to help defray the county’s cost of providing immunizations against required childhood diseases, which Health Officers are required to organize, maintain, and make available as per Health and Safety Code Section 120350.

Most recently, a Chronic Disease Prevention Coordinator in the PHB served as the program’s coordinator and was responsible for the implementation and monitoring of the Immunization Program. As the program has evolved, the program coordinator’s role has expanded and it now requires the expertise and training of a Public Health Nurse II (PHN). A vacancy in the program coordinator position provides the opportunity to align staffing with the program’s needs.

OTHER AGENCY INVOLVEMENT:
The County Human Resources Department concurs with this recommendation. Attachment A is on file with the Clerk of the Board.

FINANCING:
