RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the Board of Supervisors:
Approve expenditure of $10,000 from the Board of Supervisors (District 1) discretionary funds to Tradición Por Siempre to support the annual El Grito Celebration in East Salinas commemorating Mexican Independence Day.
SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:
Tradición Por Siempre hosts the annual El Grito Celebration in East Salinas to commemorate Mexican Independence Day on September 16. The celebration recognizes Mexican history and culture and provides an opportunity for residents to gather and participate in a community cultural event.
The requested $10,000 contribution from District 1’s discretionary funds will support the annual El Grito Celebration and other Tradición Por Siempre activities that promote cultural education, community engagement, and recognition of the historic and multicultural identity of East Salinas.
PUBLIC PURPOSE FINDINGS:
In approving this expenditure, the Board of Supervisors finds that the expenditure is for a public purpose and the transaction is not prohibited by Article XVI, Section 6 of the California Constitution. Any benefit to an individual is incidental to the significant public purpose identified in the description above.
FINANCING:
There is no impact to the General Fund. Funds will be allocated from District 1’s discretionary budget.
BOARD OF SUPERVISORS STRATEGIC PLAN GOALS:
This action supports community well-being and cultural enrichment by promoting a public celebration of Mexican history and culture, fostering community engagement and inclusion, and recognizing the multicultural identity of East Salinas and the County of Monterey.
