RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the County of Monterey Board of Supervisors:
Approve and authorize the Director of Health Services or their designee to sign Renewal and Amendment No.1 with Salinas City Elementary School District for the provision of the CalFresh Healthy Living Program to increase water, fruit, and vegetable consumption, increase physical activity levels, and provide federal nutrition food services information to the CalFresh eligible youth and families in Monterey County, extending the agreement for an additional four (4) years, for a revised term of October 1, 2019, through September 30, 2026.

SUMMARY DISCUSSION:
The CalFresh Healthy Living (CFHL) program provides Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-Education (SNAP-Ed) to eligible low-income community members through nutrition education and obesity prevention activities and interventions. CFHL works to address high obesity rates in Monterey County among children, adolescents, and adults. The SNAP-Ed County Profile Dashboard for Monterey County indicates that in 2018, 70% of adults in Monterey County had a BMI of 25 or higher and are considered overweight/obese; the state percentage is 63. Among the SNAP-Ed eligible adult population, the percentage of Monterey County residents with a BMI of 25 or higher is 74%; the state percentage is 67.
