RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the Monterey County Board of Supervisors:
a. Receive an oral report on the update of the Monterey County Gang Violence Prevention Initiative's (MCGVP) Action Plan for Building Safe and Thriving Communities and Progress Report.
b. Approve the draft of the MCGVP Initiative Action Plan for Building Safe and Thriving Communities.
SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:
The Office of Community Engagement and Advocacy of the CAO functions as the Backbone Agency to the Monterey County Gang Violence Prevention Initiative (MCGVP) and a liaison between Monterey County departments, community based organizations, grass roots organizations and local municipalities to further advance local efforts to reduce youth and gang violence.
Upon considering feedback, questions and concerns, a presentation was provided to and accepted by the HHS Committee on Iteration 3 of the MCGVP Initiative's Action Plan on April 16, 2015.
Staff will provide an oral report to the full Board of Supervisors on the Action Plan. Key elements of the Action Plan are the Framework which aligns with the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Programs (OJJDP) model for gang violence prevention and reduction, and the indicators which include implementation of a public health approach by addressing root causes and the social determinants of health that lead to gang involvement and gang violence (see attached).
The indicators for the initiative have been selected based on the following criteria;
