Report
RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the Board of Supervisors introduce, waive the reading, and set December 3, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. as the date and time to consider adoption of an ordinance amending section 12.24.020 of the Monterey County Code to establish a three-way stop intersection at Main Street and Lincoln Street and a four-way stop intersection at Jackson Street and Washington Street in Chualar in the unincorporated area of the County of Monterey.
SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:
The County has received multiple public requests for a stop intersection at the three-way intersection of Main Street and Lincoln Street and a stop intersection at the four-way intersection of Jackson Street and Washington Street to protect the safety of children and other pedestrians walking to and from Chualar Elementary School on Lincoln Street in the Chualar area. In addition, marked crosswalks will be provided after the stop sign installations. Stop signs and crosswalks will enhance the safety of pedestrians and the travelling public by controlling vehicular traffic around the school.
OTHER AGENCY INVOLVEMENT:
The Office of the County Counsel has approved the ordinance as to form. The California Highway Patrol concurs with this recommendation.
FINANCING:
There is no financial impact to the General Fund. Traffic control devices are paid from the Road Fund. The cost to install the necessary signing is estimated at $800.00. There are sufficient appropriations available in the Road Fund (Fund 002, Unit 8195) to finance this work.
