RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the Board of Supervisors:
Approve expenditure of $10,000 from the Board of Supervisors (District 1) discretionary funds to reimburse Asian Cultural Experience of Salinas (ACES) for the annual Asian Festival and other cultural and community activities supporting the history and multicultural identity of Salinas Chinatown.
SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:
The Asian Cultural Experience of Salinas (ACES) was established twenty years ago to preserve and promote the history and multicultural identity of Salinas Chinatown. For over 17 years, ACES has hosted the annual Asian Festival showcasing the vibrant history, diversity, and important contributions of the Chinese, Japanese, and Filipino communities throughout the County of Monterey.
The requested $10,000 contribution from District 1’s discretionary funds will support the annual Asian Festival and other ACES activities that promote cultural education, community engagement, and preservation of the historic and multicultural identity of Salinas Chinatown.
PUBLIC PURPOSE FINDINGS:
In approving this expenditure, the Board of Supervisors finds that the expenditure is for a public purpose and the transaction is not prohibited by Article XVI, Section 6 of the California Constitution. Any benefit to an individual is incidental to the significant public purpose identified in the description above.
FINANCING:
There is no impact to the General Fund. Funds will be allocated from District 1’s discretionary budget.
