RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the Board of Supervisors:
a. Receive a status report on the 2014-2015 Monterey County Strategic Initiatives, Key Objectives and Milestones; and
b. Provide further direction to staff as necessary.
SUMMARY:
In December 2013, the Board conducted an all-day public workshop with department heads to create initial consensus on priorities for updated County strategic initiatives and key objectives. The workshop activities identified key department priorities as they related to various policy areas. Further work was conducted in early 2014 to discuss and refine the types of activities that were required to achieve the key objectives. These activities are described as "Milestones." Milestones are a "to do" list which reveal the work that needs to be completed to implement the strategic initiatives for each policy area. Work groups gathered to define the milestones and create timelines to build accountability in completing these tasks. The work groups delved deeper and created "Success Indicators" to measure outcomes and be able to more easily define accomplishments and challenge areas.
On March 25, 2014 and June 3, 2014, the Board approved the 2014-2015 Monterey County Strategic Initiatives, Key Objectives, Milestones and Success Indicators. Updates to the Board are to be made mid-year and annually.
DISCUSSION:
The Board of Supervisors Strategic Initiatives and Key Objectives address five broad policy areas as follows: Economic Development, Administration, Health and Human Services, Infrastructure and Public Safety. They are included as Attachment A. The "to do" list is the blueprint on how we mapped out how we will achieve our desired outcomes.
