a. Approve and authorize the Director of the Department of Social Services, or his designee, to sign an agreement with United Way of Monterey County for $120,000 to provide volunteer community service opportunities for CalWORKs customers who need additional employment experiences to successfully compete for employment in the public and private sectors for the period July 1, 2013 through June 30, 2014; and
b. Authorize the Director of the Department of Social Services, or his designee, to sign up to three (3) amendments to this agreement where the total amendments do not exceed 10% of the original contract amount, and do not significantly change the scope of work

RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the Board of Supervisors:
a. Approve and authorize the Director of the Department of Social Services, or his designee, to sign an agreement with United Way of Monterey County for $120,000 to provide volunteer community service opportunities for CalWORKs customers who need additional employment experiences to successfully compete for employment in the public and private sectors for the period July 1, 2013 through June 30, 2014; and

SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:
Social Services is recommending an agreement with the United Way Monterey County Volunteer Center who develops and monitors volunteer community service opportunities for CalWORKs customers. Volunteer positions are designed to build on and expand the customer's existing skills with a goal of increasing their employability and earnings potential.
