It is recommended that the Board of Supervisors:
a. Receive an oral report from service providers and county officials, which assesses existing gaps in services as well as recommended steps or actions to effectively address current issues of encampments in the Chinatown area; and
b. Provide direction to county staff for next steps.
SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:
At the March 15, 2016 Board of Supervisors meeting, the board requested a plan from the county on strategies to address and provide a more permanent solution to the encampment situation in Chinatown.
County staff and community service providers will be addressing the Board to share their findings and projections of what it would take to address the homeless issue using mid-term and long term strategies. The most urgent gaps in services will be discussed and suggestions to better address homelessness will be offered. The agencies presenting this information collaborated in a brainstorming session to formulate these steps with the goal of providing long term solutions for the homeless population residing in encampments in the Chinatown area of Salinas.
OTHER AGENCY INVOLVEMENT:
Development and coordination of this presentation is a cooperative effort between Economic Development, Social Services, Health Department, City of Salinas, Mid Peninsula Housing and local homeless services providers.
