RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the Parks Commission:
Receive a presentation from Monterey County Water Resources with a brief background and update on the following Agency projects: Interlake Tunnel, Nacimiento Dam Plunge Pool Project, and San Antonio Dam Spillway Replacement Project.
SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:
The Interlake Tunnel and San Antonio Spillway Modification Project includes construction of a 2-mile-long water conveyance tunnel from Nacimiento Reservoir to San Antonio Reservoir and modifications to the elevation of the spillway at San Antonio Reservoir. Goals of the project include increasing available surface water supply, providing surface water for environmental needs, improving the hydrologic balance of the Salinas Valley Groundwater basin, reducing the volume of flood control releases, protecting agricultural viability, and minimizing impacts to hydroelectric production.
The Nacimiento Plunge Pool Project is a project in response to storm events and reservoir releases which caused extensive erosion in the plunge pool at the bottom of the Nacimiento Spillway. The project includes removal of an existing rock outcrop and placement of an erosion protection barrier along the bottom of the plunge pool.
The San Antonio Spillway Replacement Project is a full replacement of the existing San Antonio Dam Spillway. This is a California Department of Water Resources Division of Safety of Dams mandated project in response to the Oroville Spillway Failure in 2017. The project is mandated to be completed by December 2031.
