Report
RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the Board of Supervisors consider adopting a resolution to:
a. Authorize and approve the dissolving of the Veterans’ Issues Advisory Committee, and
b. Provide direction to staff as appropriate.

SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:
The Board of Supervisors established the Veterans’ Issues Advisory Committee (VIAC or the Committee) through Resolution 20-217 on December 8, 2020. The mission of the Committee was to serve as liaison between the veteran community and the municipalities surrounding the former Fort Ord. The Military and Veterans Affairs Advisory Committee (MVAAC) serves as the primary liaison between the veteran community in all of Monterey County and the County of Monterey, and the services rendered by Committee has been largely duplicative of the MVAAC’s efforts. To the extent the Committee’s service has been distinct from MVAAC, MVAAC is amending its bylaws to incorporate the diligent work of the Committee. There being no further unique work the Committee can perform, and following the diligent service of its Committee members since its founding in 2020, the Committee recommends the County Board of Supervisors dissolve the Committee. The Committee unanimously voted to recommend dissolution at its last meeting on April 24, 2025.

For these reasons, the interim Director of the Military & Veterans Affairs Office recommends dissolving the Veterans’ Issues Advisory Committee.

OTHER AGENCY INVOLVEMENT:
The Military and Veterans Affairs Advisory Committee and County Counsel concur with this recommendation.

FINANCING:
The dissolution of the Committee has no impact on the County’s General Fund.

BOARD OF SUPERVISORS STRATEGIC INITIATIVES:
These actions will help ensure the timely provision of necessary services to all County Departments.
