Report
RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the Board of Supervisors:
Approve the Monterey County Commission on the Status of Women Annual Report Fiscal year 2011-2012

SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:
This report provides the Board of Supervisors with a summary of the Commission’s priorities, accomplishments and developments over the 2011-2012 fiscal year. The year was a time of transition for the Commission, 10 new Commissioners were appointed resulting in opportunities for strategic planning. The Commission took steps this year to be more visible and engage with members of the community. A commitment to rotating Commission meetings throughout the regions of the county was adopted and implemented. The Commission further operationalized commitment to community engagement through partnerships with allied organizations such as the Domestic Violence Coordinating Council, the Equal Opportunity Commission and the Restorative Justice Commission.

The 2012 Outstanding women of Monterey County event was a success recognizing five unsung heroines who have made a difference in their community. The 2012 event was fully funded by private donations and sponsorships. The Commission entered the age of social media, connecting and extending its reach via Facebook. What began as a strategy to create more opportunities for visibility for the Commission became a greater focus on increasing genuine engagement with the community at large.

OTHER AGENCY INVOLVEMENT:
Preparation of the report for submission to the board was provided by the Department of Social and Employment Services.

FINANCING:
Recommended actions have no budgetary impact and do not affect County discretionary funds.
