SUMMARY:

The proposed Amendment allocates funding in the amount of $85,000 to the existing agreement with Rancho Cielo to ensure continuation of services during FY 15-16.

DISCUSSION:

Rancho Cielo is a California 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established in 2000 as a comprehensive learning and social services center for underserved youth in Monterey County.

Through creative partnerships established with local organizations and the business community, educational and law enforcement agencies, the program targets at-risk youth and provides a wide array of services, programs and structured activities to lessen exposure to, and involvement with, juvenile crime in Monterey County.

Rancho Cielo hosts educational opportunities to students who could not achieve their academic goals in a traditional school setting through a small classroom size and tailored curriculum, as well as vocational training and job placement.  It provides a variety of enrichment and vocational classes such as wood shop, sports, arts and crafts, music instruction and gardening in a project-based learning environment; exposes participants to cultural events, sports, recreation and outdoor activities within its extensive grounds.  Support services include drug and alcohol counseling, health education and family planning, gang intervention, conflict resolution, anger management, and grief counseling.

Probation has been a key partner in the delivery of services since inception with supervision, case management for students involved in the juvenile court, meals and transportation.

The proposed Renewal and Amendment allocates additional funding to last year’s Agreement in the amount of $85,000 for FY 15-16 to ensure continuation of services. A copy of the Renewal and Amendment is on file with the Clerk to the Board.

FINANCING:

Additional funding in the amount of $85,000 has been included in PRO001- Probation to support the program during FY 15-16.  There will be no impact on General Fund Contributions associated with this recommendation.
