RECOMMENDATION:

It is recommended the Board of Supervisors:

Approve and Authorize the Contracts/Purchasing Officer or Contracts/Purchasing Supervisor to execute the Renewal of and Amendment #2 to an agreement with Garden of Memories Cemetery for cremation of deceased indigent persons, retroactively extending from June 30, 2016 through and to June 30, 2018, and adding $30,000 to the agreement, for a total cost of $55,000.

SUMMARY:

In Monterey County, the Sheriff/Coroner is a combined position and Coroner's functions are overseen by the Monterey County Sheriff. The Coroner is required, under Health and Safety Code Sections 102850-102870, to inquire into and determine the circumstances surrounding any violent, sudden or unusual deaths, unattended deaths, deaths where deceased was not under physician care for twenty days prior to death, suspected suicides, deaths following an injury or accident or occurring under any circumstances where there is a reasonable grounds to suspect that the death was caused by the criminal acts of another person.

The Coroner is charged with performing an autopsy and producing an autopsy report, with laboratory findings, for investigators to act upon. The Coroner's staff makes every effort to locate next of kin for all deceased persons, but occasionally, no relative can be found or will come forth to claim the deceased's remains. In these cases, the deceased is cremated at county expense.
