RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the Board of Supervisors:
a. Approve the submission of two (2) entries to the 2017 California State Association of Counties (CSAC) Challenge Awards competition "Monterey County Farmworker Advisory Committee" and "Developing a Public Health Community Engagement Academy"; and
b. Authorize submission of the entries by the County Administrative Officer or his designee

SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:
Each year the California State Association of Counties (CSAC) invites counties to submit nominations for the CSAC Challenge Awards. These unique awards recognize the innovative and creative spirit of California county governments for finding new and effective ways of providing projects, programs and services to their citizens.

The following is an overview of the programs recommended for submission to the 2017 competition.

1. Monterey County Farmworker Advisory Committee: The Monterey County Agricultural Commissioner Office and Center for Community Advocacy established a Farmworker Advisory Committee to work on safety issues, particularly pesticide use.

2. Developing a Public Health Community Engagement Academy: An innovative community engagement program resulted in community members working to improve the health of their communities through built environment and systems' change.

OTHER AGENCY INVOLVEMENT:
The County Administrative Office-Intergovernmental and Legislative Affairs Division prepared this report with materials submitted by the Agriculture Commissioner and Health Department.
