Report

RECOMMENDATION:

It is recommended that the Alternative Energy and Environment Committee receive a presentation from AMGAG Energy Watch staff regarding solar energy adoption in the AMBAG region.

SUMMARY/ DISCUSSION:

At the September 28, 2016 AEE Committee meeting, staff was directed to coordinate with AMBAG Energy Watch to provide an update on solar infrastructure capacity throughout the Monterey Bay region. Elisabeth Bertrand, Special Projects Director of AMBAG Energy Watch, will provide the AEE Committee with a presentation on AMBAG’s analysis of solar energy adaptation in the counties of Monterey, Santa Cruz, and San Benito.

AMBAG Energy Watch staff compiled the solar energy adoption data for the AMBAG region using the public reporting site for the California Solar Initiative (CSI).  The data is broken down by each jurisdiction on a county basis and covers the period of 1/1/1998 - 7/31/2017.   In total, as reported, the region has adopted 108,296 kW of solar energy to date, with 59,124 kW of solar energy adopted in Monterey County.

Additionally, information is provided on the number of new solar meters installed annually in Unincorporated Monterey County, as well as the cumulative number of solar meters. In the past ten years, the number of solar meters installed in the unincorporated areas of Monterey County has increased nearly 1000%.

OTHER AGENCY INVOLVEMENT:

AMBAG Energy Watch staff compiled the data, created the presentation slides, and will provide the presentation on solar adoption.

FINANCING:

The recommended action has no impact upon the County General Fund.
