RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the Board of Supervisors:

Approve and authorize the Sheriff or Undersheriff to apply for, as the Monterey County Sheriff's Office, a twenty-five month (June 1, 2018 to June 30th, 2020) competitive grant to the California Department of Justice (CDOJ) for the Tobacco Law Enforcement Grant Program in the amount of $341,534.00 for Fiscal Year 2018-19, $325,815.00 for Fiscal Year 2019-20, for a total grant amount of $667,349.00

SUMMARY:
The Sheriff's Office seeks approval to apply for a CDOJ grant for Tobacco Law Enforcement in the amount of $667,349.00. This grant is only open to local law enforcement agencies. Based on the County's budget year, MCSO will begin the grant on July 1, 2018 if awarded and approved. This report seeks only permission to apply for a competitive grant; if the grant is awarded, the Sheriff's Office will return to your Board, and will request a resolution approving the grant, a Memorandum of Understanding with the California Department of Justice, and any necessary budget adjustments.

DISCUSSION:
The Sheriff's Office seeks approval to apply for this grant, under the new policies adopted by the Board of Supervisors. A copy of the grant narrative and budget are attached. The grant deadline for submission is March 23, 2018, and the anticipated grant award date is prior to June 1, 2018.
