Receive a community update from Monterey-Salinas Transit.
Report
RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the Board of Supervisors receive a community update from Monterey- Salinas Transit (MST).

SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:
Monterey-Salinas Transit (MST) is Monterey County's primary provider of public transportation. It was originally formed by a joint-powers agreement as an "MST Joint Powers Agency" in 1972, then revised in 1981 to include the Salinas Transit System. Following the passing of legislation (AB 644), the MST Joint Powers Agency was replaced by the current MST District as of July 1, 2010.

MST provides traditional fixed route and on-demand public transportation to an estimated population of 435,232 within a service area of approximately 295 square miles. Bus transit services are provided throughout Monterey County and north into downtown Watsonville, Aptos and Santa Cruz in Santa Cruz County, and Gilroy, Morgan Hill and San Jose in Santa Clara County, as well as south to San Miguel, Paso Robles and Templeton in northern San Luis Obispo County.

In keeping with its mission in "advocating and delivering quality public transportation as a leader within our community and industry", MST wishes to provide the Board of Supervisors with a community update on MST matters including: ridership, budget and operating expenses, Measure Q and X, and major projects and challenges.

OTHER AGENCY INVOLVEMENT:
Staff coordinated with MST in the preparation of this staff report. A presentation will be provided to the Board of Supervisors by MST Chief Executive Officer, Carl Sedoryk.
