RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the Board of Supervisors:
Nominate the Director of the Monterey County Military & Veterans Affairs Office (MVAO), Jason Cameron, to be the Monterey County representative on the California Central Coast Veterans Cemetery Advisory Committee.
SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:
California Military and Veterans Code (M&VC) Section 1450.2 establishes the California Central Coast Veterans Cemetery (CCCVC) Advisory Committee. The purpose of the Advisory Committee is to provide advice to CalVet regarding significant changes in the design of the cemetery. M&VC 1456 requires proposals for the construction, placement, or donation of monuments and memorials to be reviewed by the CCCVC Advisory Committee. All proposals for the construction, placement, or donation of monuments and memorials to the cemetery shall be subject to the approval of the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Membership on the CCCVC Advisory Committee shall consist of persons appointed by the Secretary, including:
• One representative from the County of Monterey, nominated by the Board of Supervisors of the County of Monterey.
• One representative from the City of Seaside, nominated by the City Council of the City of Seaside.
• One representative from the Fort Ord Reuse Authority, nominated by the board of directors of the Fort Ord Reuse Authority.
• Two members from the Fort Ord Veterans Cemetery Citizens Advisory Committee, nominated by that committee.
• At least two members from CalVet.
Members serve a two-year term with the option to apply for additional successive terms.
OTHER AGENCY INVOLVEMENT:
County Counsel has reviewed the nomination recommendation.
FINANCING:
Approval of this action has no impact on the County General Fund.
BOARD OF SUPERVISORS STRATEGIC INITIATIVES:
This nomination correlates to the Administration, Health & Human Services, and Infrastructure Strategic Initiatives adopted by the Board of Supervisors through the representation of Monterey County veterans’ concerns on the CCCVC AC.
