RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the Parks Commission receive a report on the Parks Foundation of Monterey County.
SUMMARY:
Parks Commissioners requested a report on the Parks Foundation of Monterey County (Parks Foundation). Staff has prepared a report to provide information about the Parks Foundation, a nonprofit public benefit corporation created under the laws of the State of California and its purpose.
Over the years in the Foundation has provided $30,000-$100,000 to support various County Park projects. They also assist other entities in Monterey County. Their work in supporting park projects has made a positive impact.
DISCUSSION:
The Parks Foundation of Monterey County (Parks Foundation) was established in 1980 as a non-profit corporation, separate from County government, dedicated to enriching cultural, environmental and recreational programs in Monterey County Parks. Monterey County Board of Supervisors approved a 10-year agreement with the Parks Foundation on December 17, 2013, ending on December 31, 2023 (Attachment 1). By-laws for this organization was adopted in March 1997 by their Board of Directors (Attachment 2). As per the agreement, the Parks Foundation has the sole purpose of assisting Monterey County RMA-Parks in facilitating the acquisition, development, maintenance, and operation of the County's parks and associated park facilities. The agreement also allows the Parks Foundation to utilize County Park facilities, for Foundation business and social meetings, for fund raising, special event activities, and to operate concessions as approved by County (RMA-Parks) to help acquire, develop, operate, and maintain the County park system for the general public to enjoy.
