RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the Board of Supervisors:
a. Accept a $150,000 Grant Award from the State of California Office of Traffic Safety ("OTS") for the Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Program; and
b. Authorize the Director of Health or Assistant Director of Health and their designees to execute Grant Agreement, No. PS20015, with OTS in support of the Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Program, in the amount of $150,000, for the grant period October 1, 2019 to September 30, 2020.

SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:
The Health Department's Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Program funded by the State of California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) is a program within the Monterey County Health Department (MCHD). MCHD through its Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Program will provide active transportation education in South Monterey County to support safe environments for pedestrians and cyclists while encouraging students and parents to use active modes of transportation.

South Monterey County has faced serious problems with automobile crashes involving pedestrians and bicyclists. This problem was highlighted by the 2016 OTS Rankings, which show that for pedestrian injuries and fatalities for children younger than age 15, Soledad ranked 7th worst of 94 similarly sized cities, Gonzales ranked 11th worst of 67 similarly sized cities and Greenfield ranked 35th worst of 104 similarly sized cities. For bicyclist injuries and fatalities for children younger than age 15, Greenfield ranks 4th worst.
