Report

RECOMMENDATION:

It is recommended that the Board of Supervisors:

Receive a presentation from the Monterey County Health Department, Planning, Evaluation, and Policy Unit on DataShare Monterey County (http://www.datasharemontereycounty.org/).

SUMMARY:

Monterey County Health Department, in partnership with Conduent Healthy Communities Institute, Inc., has made available to county staff, community-based organizations, partners, and county residents a very cost-effective resource in a one-stop data dashboard. DataShare Monterey County (<http://www.datasharemontereycounty.org/>) supports the goals of shared data measurement tracking and evaluating indicators visualizing county trends and comparisons, and working together to reduce health and social inequities. It will help us to collectively focus energies and highlight efforts already underway.

DISCUSSION:

Monterey County Health Department (MCHD) works with many partners to provide up-to-date data created from a variety of secondary state and federal data sources such as the U. S. Census Bureau, the California Health Interview Survey, and Kidsdata.org.  DataShare Monterey County consolidates these and dozens of other data sources to create one resource focusing on Monterey County.

In partnership with Conduent Healthy Communities Institute (HCI), MCHD has provided a single location to query over 270 indicators of demographics, health, education, safety and prevention, early childhood development, and more. Data are available in charts and graphs, and customized dashboards (such as Disparities and  Community Health Assessment) are readily available. Comparisons between local, state, and national data are available as are comparisons to Healthy People 2030. There are data reports by partners, stories, links to initiatives, and access to a national database of promising practices for partners to consider for local implementation. Local initiatives are highlighted under a Local Progress tab.

This work supports the Health Department’s 2018-2022 Strategic Plan Goal through 1. Empower the community to improve health; and 2. Enhance public health and safety through prevention.  DataShare Monterey County additionally supports four of the ten essential public health services: 1. Monitor health status to identify and solve community health problems 3. Inform, educate, and empower people about health issues; 4. Mobilize community partnerships and action to identify and solve health problems; and 5. Develop policies and plans that support individual and community health efforts.

OTHER AGENCY INVOLVEMENT:

There is no other agency involvement.

FINANCING:

The costs for the data dashboard have no impact on the Fiscal Year (FY) 2020/21 Recommended Budget and are covered by the County General Fund and Public Health Realignment Revenue.
