RECOMMENDATION

It is recommended that the Health, Housing, Homelessness, and Human Services Committee:

a. Receive an oral report regarding Board of Supervisor’s Referral Number 2017.21 regarding Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs); and

b. Provide direction to staff.

 

SUMMARY/DISCUSSION

Melanie Beretti, Housing and Special Programs Service Manager for the Housing and Community Development Department (HCD) will provide an oral presentation providing an overview and status update on County policies and County-lead program initiatives to help encourage and streamline construction of Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs). Ms. Beretti will be joined by Kelly DeWolfe, Impact Associate-Affordable Housing with the United Way Monterey County who will provide an oral presentation overview of the United Way Monterey County’s ADU projects an initiative focused on changing the narrative around ADUs and providing homeowners with resources to make approaching ADU projects easier to navigate

 

OTHER AGENCY INVOLVEMENT

The County Health Department Environmental Health Bureau (EHB) are responsible for public health policies and initiatives that are applicable to ADU permitting and construction, and EHB staff will be consulted for this presentation.

 

FINANCING

There is no impact to the General Fund to provide this report. HCD staff time to write this report is funded through the adopted Fiscal Year (FY) 2020-21 budget for General Fund, Administration Appropriation Unit RMA013.

Implementing policies and initiatives to increase construction of ADUs in Monterey County supports the Board of Supervisors; Strategic Initiative for Health and Human Services by providing safe and affordable long-term housing alternatives for County residents.
