RECOMMENDATION/SUMMARY:
It is recommended that the Board of Supervisors:

Authorize and Approve the Library Director and the Monterey County Sheriff's Office or his/her Designee to enter into a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), allowing the Sheriff's Office to use a room inside the San Lucas Library as a field office and in turn, provide for a safer library, for a period of another five (5) years upon the signed date of the Memorandum of Understanding.


SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:


The Library has had a branch library in the community of San Lucas since 1916. The library is seen as a beloved and important asset to the community and is a popular educational and recreational site for adults and children.

The library had been located at 45692 Teresa Street in San Lucas since 1990 until 2010, when that location was permanently closed. In 2016, a new library was built, from County funds and private donations, and it is approximately 1,200 square feet and is located at 54692 Teresa Street, near the former site.

Because of safety concerns in the community and repeated vandalism and problems at the library, the Sheriff's staff has worked closely with the Library staff, often stopping at the library to make contact with members of the community and to help create a safer library environment and a safer community. The relationship between the Library and Sheriff has been beneficial to both agencies as well as to the community, and a continuation of this collaboration would be advantageous to the community and the County of Monterey.
