Report

RECOMMENDATION:

It is recommended that the Health, Housing and Human Services Committee of the Board of Supervisors:

Receive a PowerPoint presentation regarding the 9-8-8 Suicide Prevention Crisis Hotline.

SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:

The Monterey County  Health Department, Behavioral Health Bureau and the Family Service Agency of the Central Coast, Suicide Prevention Services will provide a PowerPoint presentation regarding the 9-8-8 Suicide & Crisis lifeline.

9-8-8 is a national network of over 200 local, independent, and state-funded crisis centers equipped to help people in emotional distress or experiencing a suicidal crisis.  When people call 9-8-8, they are connected to trained counselors that are part of the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline network.  The local Lifeline number (1-877-663-5433) will always remain available, adding the 9-8-8 number will make it easier to access a strengthened and expanded network of crisis call centers.

Suicide is the tenth leading cause of deaths in the United States.  The national suicide rate has been rising steadily.   Suicide is preventable and the 9-8-8 number is one step in the direction of saving lives.

This work supports the Monterey County Health Department 2018-2022 Strategic Plan Goals:  1. Empower the community to improve health; and 3. Ensure access to culturally ad linguistically appropriate, customer-friendly, quality health services. It also supports one of the ten essential public health services, specifically: 1. Link people to needed personal health services and assure the provision of health care when otherwise unavailable.

OTHER AGENCY INVOLVEMENT:

Monterey County Health Department, Behavioral Health Bureau, Monterey County Emergency Communications, and Suicide Prevention Service of the Central Coast have all contributed to efforts around the 9-8-8 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

FINANCING:

Receiving this report will have no impact on the Health Department Behavioral Health Bureau’s FY 2022-23 Adopted Budget nor to the General Fund.
