DISCUSSION:

University of Denver’s Master’s of Library and Information Science program is a source of graduate-level training for librarians. Monterey County Free Libraries (MCFL) has the opportunity to work with College of Health and Human Services interns locally thanks to the agreement with California State University Monterey Bay but they do not have the specified library science program there to prepare interns for future work in libraries.

The Agreement is a three-year agreement required by the University of Denver in order to offer official remote internships for credit. The University sought MCFL for remote internships in order to engage their Master’s level library students. University of Denver has agreed to waive indemnity in order to comply with Monterey County Requirements.

University of Denver has sent MCFL two graduate intern applications in anticipation of this agreement. MCFL has experience engaging interns remotely in the areas of digital user engagement, local history, archives and digital storytelling. Assistance with Literacy initiatives such as online conversation groups and classes are another area for Master’s level remote internship tasks.

An official internship agreement would allow MCFL to advertise our internship needs through the University of Denver.

OTHER AGENCY INVOLVEMENT:

County Counsel reviewed the contents of the Internship Agreement and approved the non-standard provisions with the indemnity waiver. The library director recommends approval of the proposed Internship Agreement. The agreement provides that students are attending the University of Denver 100% remotely and the Student Professional Liability Insurance program provides indemnity, including legal defense costs for the student and Monterey County, if needed.

FINANCING:

The recommended approval of the Internship Agreement has no financial impact on the Library Budget or the County General Fund.

BOARD OF SUPERVISORS STRATEGIC INITIATIVES:

The proposed Memorandum of Understanding for Internship with the University of Denver will allow MCFL to utilize staffing resources and tools to enhance library programs.
